Students earn credit for participation in Rochester Community (off campus) bands and orchestras. Performance and rehearsal times and dates depend upon the schedule of the community ensemble selected by thestudent. There may be an audition required by these ensembles.

Dr. Michael E. Ruhling is Assistant Professor of Music at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) where he teaches courses in music history and appreciation. He is an associate professor of Fine Arts in the College of Liberal Arts at RIT, teaching a variety of courses in music history and appreciation. He has also taught courses at the Eastman School of Music, Goshen College, Huntington College, and The Catholic University of America. Dr. Ruhling is a member of the conducting and lecture faculty of the Classial Musical Festival held each August in Eisenstadt, Austria, and is an associate conductor of the Brighton Symphony Orchestra

The Concert Band is an wind ensemble that performs a variety of works including the Sousa marches, British Band literature, Broadway music, the latest compositions, and much more. The band typically performs several times each quarter.
For the audition please prepare a piece of music that you already know, preferably from a solo concerto or sonata. In addition there will be sight-reading. Generally speaking if you performed in a concert band in high school you will be successful in performing the music performed by the RIT Concert Band. Students can register for this 1 credit course. Members are selected by audition.
Michael Ruling has been the conductor and music director of the Rochester Institute of Technology Orchestra for nine years. Participation in the RIT Orchestra is open to all RIT students, faculty and staff, as well as the Greater Rochester Community, by audition.
Auditions for the RIT Orchestra will take place during the first Monday night of the fall quarter, September 1 at 7:00 in the SAU music room. Auditions are usually for seating purposes for strings, but are a bit more competitive for winds, and take place the first week of classes in the fall, as well as by appointment at other times of the year. They consist of orchestral excerpts (which you can get (pdf format) by clicking your instrument on our website), scales (major and minor keys containing up to four sharps or four flats), sight reading exercises, and you may play a piece you have prepared if you wish. (It's all very painless!) RIT Orchestra's mission is to develop the skills and knowledge of amateur musicians, and thus enhance the life of this community and the communities into which RIT graduates enter. Participants in the RIT Orchestra come from all parts of the RIT and greater Rochester community, and include students, faculty and staff from each college at RIT. During the academic year, members of the RIT Orchestra study the various theoretical, historical and technical facets of the musical arts through rehearsing and performing orchestral and chamber repertoire from ca. 1600 to the present day. Membership is open to anyone from RIT and the Rochester area that values the role of quality amateur music performance. IT Summer Reading Orchestra to play through major orchestral/vocal works. Anyone who plays an orchestral instrument and would like to familiarize themselves with repertoire and styles is welcome to join us.
Dr. Paul Shewan, shewanp@roberts.edu, Associate professor at Roberts Wesleyan College, conducts the Wind Ensemble and the Roberts Wesleyan College-Community Orchestra, and teaches trumpet and conducting. He earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from Roberts Wesleyan College, master’s degree in trumpet performance and literature from Eastman School of Music, and D.M.A. in conducting from Eastman School of Music. At Eastman, he studied with Mendi Rodan, Neil Varon, Donald Hunsberger, and Mark Scatterday, and appeared in several concerts, conducting the Eastman Wind Orchestra, the Eastman Wind Ensemble, and the Eastman Conducting Orchestra. Dr. Shewan is a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra trumpet section and also performs with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. He has recorded as a trumpet soloist and conductor for the Albany Record Label.

The Roberts Wesleyan College Symphony Orchestra, a truly remarkable symphony orchestra, performs in Hale Auditorium on the campus of Roberts Wesleyan College. Growing steadily in musical excellence and programming since its beginning in 1985, the orchestra now boasts highly skilled college and regional musicians who perform the highest quality orchestral repertoire. In addition to a Classical Concert series, the Orchestra performs a yearly Educational Concert for 3rd graders, providing the opportunity for nearly 900 children each year to experiencea live orchestra and learn about instruments. Each year, recognized professional musicians are featured soloists with the Orchestra, as are the most outstanding student musician winners of the Concerto/Aria competition.

Roberts Wesleyan Wind Ensemble

The Wind Ensemble performs a wide variety of the highest quality repertoire for wind ensemble. The auditioned ensemble rehearses on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday each week. They perform in the Homecoming and Christmas concerts each year as well as in their own concert in the Fall and Spring. The group also tours to different locations every year in February.
Each organization meets for an average of three hours' rehearsal every week. Opportunities are provided for all groups to perform on and off campus throughout the year. Instrumental groups, offered when demand is sufficient, include Chamber Symphony, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, String Band, andWind Ensemble. Admission is by permission of instructor following audition. Audition times for any givenensemble are given in the Master Schedule of classes.

An orchestra of close to seventy musicians, the Symphony combines within its ranks gifted student performers and Artist Faculty. Among the latter are members of Geneseo's superb ensembles-in-residence: the Tremont String Quartet and the Geneseo Wind Quintet. Recent performances by the Geneseo Symphony includes works such as Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony, Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, Respighi's Fountains of Rome and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

A large wind band of over forty-five musicians, the Wind Ensemble is dedicated to performing the most exciting and challenging music written for winds. The ensemble performs frequently on campus and in the region. Recent performances have included such composers as Hanson, Khatchaturian, Jacob, Grainger, and Vaughan Williams.
The Wind Ensemble has many non-majors in its ranks and encourages all interested students to watch for audition announcements at the start of each term.

Open to experienced trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, and tuba players. Repertoire includes fanfares, Renaissance pieces, contemporary literature written specifically for brass, and arrangements of light classics and popular music.
Available for one academic credit starting in the fall semester of 2009! Brass Choir is a 20-30 member ensemble dedicated to performing quality brass music at a high level while fostering a spirit of community among brass players on the River Campus. Open to experienced trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, and tuba players who played throughout high school. Auditions may be necessary to determine the competency of new members before acceptance into the group can be guaranteed. Repertoire includes fanfares, Renaissance pieces, contemporary literature written specifically for brass, and arrangements of light classics and popular music. Members are invited and encouraged to arrange or compose for the group. Recent selections performed by the Brass Choir include Chris Hazell's Three Brass Cats, Fanfare from "La Peri" by Paul Dukas, Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, and Eric Ewazen's Symphony in Brass.

University of Rochester Wind Symphony

comprised of students, faculty, staff, and community members who are serious and accomplished musicians, but whose life course may vary from music to medicine, business, engineering or linguistics. Conducted by Mr. William Tiberio, the ensemble studies and performs standard and contemporary wind music as well as transcriptions from other genres. Recent repertoire has included such renowned composers as Grainger, Chance, Tull, Tichelli, Vaughan Williams, Hanson, Hindemith, Ives, and Sousa. In addition to regular on-campus performances, the University Wind Symphony undertakes frequent performing tours.
Formed in 1956, The University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra (URSO) continues a tradition of joyful performances of masterworks of the symphonic repertoire. Numbering one-hundred members, the Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Dr. David Harman) is a blend of university undergraduate and graduate students as well as talented community musicians from the greater Rochester area. Our series of four free concerts each year showcases this accomplished ensemble. The Symphony Orchestra performs in the Henry Alvah Strong Auditorium on the University of Rochester River Campus. This year, auditions for Symphony Orchestra and for Chamber Orchestra will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 2 and 3. Although membership is normally granted through auditions held each September, experienced string players are welcome to audition at any time during the year.
