Ruhling is Assistant Professor of Music at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) where he teaches courses in music history and appreciation. He is an associate professor of Fine Arts in the College of Liberal Arts at RIT, teaching a variety of courses in music history and appreciation. He has also taught courses at the Eastman School of Music, Goshen College, Huntington College, and The Catholic University of America. Dr. Ruhling is a member of the conducting and lecture faculty of the Classial Musical Festival held each August in Eisenstadt, Austria, and is an associate conductor of the Brighton Symphony Orchestra

Generally speaking if you performed in a concert band in high school you will be successful in performing the music performed by the RIT Concert Band. Students can register for this 1 credit course. • Michael Ruling has been the conductor and music director of the Rochester Institute of Technology Orchestra for nine years. Participation in the RIT Orchestra is open to all RIT students, faculty and staff, as well as the Greater Rochester Community, by audition.
• Auditions for the RIT Orchestra will take place during the first Monday night of the fall quarter, September 1 at 7:00 in the SAU music room. Auditions are usually for seating purposes for strings, but are a bit more competitive for winds, and take place the first week of classes in the fall, as well as by appointment at other times of the year. They consist of orchestral excerpts (which you can get (pdf format) by clicking your instrument on our website), scales (major and minor keys containing up to four sharps or four flats), sight reading exercises, and you may play a piece you have prepared if you wish. (It's all very painless!) • Dr. Paul Shewan,  shewanp@roberts.edu, Associate professor at Roberts Wesleyan College, conducts the Wind Ensemble and the Roberts Wesleyan College-Community Orchestra, and teaches trumpet and conducting. He earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from Roberts Wesleyan College, master’s degree in trumpet performance and literature from Eastman School of Music, and D.M.A. in conducting from Eastman School of Music. At Eastman, he studied with Mendi Rodan, Neil Varon, Donald Hunsberger, and Mark Scatterday, and appeared in several concerts, conducting the Eastman Wind Orchestra, the Eastman Wind Ensemble, and the Eastman Conducting Orchestra. Dr. Shewan is a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra trumpet section and also performs with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. He has recorded as a trumpet soloist and conductor for the Albany Record Label.

• The Roberts Wesleyan College Symphony Orchestra, a truly remarkable symphony orchestra, performs in Hale Auditorium on the campus of Roberts Wesleyan College.  Growing steadily in musical excellence and programming since its beginning in 1985, the orchestra now boasts highly skilled college and regional musicians who perform the highest quality orchestral repertoire. In addition to a Classical Concert series, the Orchestra performs a yearly Educational Concert for 3rd graders, providing the opportunity for nearly 900 children each year to experiencea live orchestra and learn about instruments. Each year, recognized professional musicians are featured soloists with the Orchestra, as are the most outstanding student musician winners of the Concerto/Aria competition.

• An orchestra of close to seventy musicians, the Symphony combines within its ranks gifted student performers and Artist Faculty. Auditions may be necessary to determine the competency of new members before acceptance into the group can be guaranteed. • Formed in 1956, The University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra (URSO) continues a tradition of joyful performances of masterworks of the symphonic repertoire. Numbering one-hundred members, the Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Dr. David Harman) is a blend of university undergraduate and graduate students as well as talented community musicians from the greater Rochester area. Our series of four free concerts each year showcases this accomplished ensemble. The Symphony Orchestra performs in the Henry Alvah Strong Auditorium on the University of Rochester River Campus. This year, auditions for Symphony Orchestra and for Chamber Orchestra will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 2 and 3. Although membership is normally granted through auditions held each September, experienced string players are welcome to audition at any time during the year.
